  • 30 gal Poly Drum Heater Band

Hey guys, with the quanity of oil I'm getting from my new source I am changing my prefiltered system to 55 gal drums. I formerly used 30 gal poly barrels. I very recently bought this 250 watt Brisk Heat drum band which is designed for the poly barrels. So recent that its only been used once for about a 20 hour period. I measured the band heat at 150 degrees on max though the thermostat and specs say 160. With no insulation I pulled a barrel of partially hydrogenated oil up to 110 in 20 hours and suspect I could have gone higher but I just needed the oil liquid enough for prefilter. It only pulls 2.08 amps.

I paid a bit less than what they are trying to sell it for on the manufacturers web site but since I now have absolutely no use for it I'd really like to get it gone and thought I'd give yall first crack before flea bay. I'll sell it to a DFA member for $100 + lets say $10 shipping. I'll be listing it on flea bay for $130 + shipping the first of next week so if anyone is interested let me know asap.

Here's a link to the manufacturers web site with the specs. http://www.briskheat.com/p-106-dpcs-...rums-120v.aspx

All...how effective would this be for heating a collection barrel that's been sitting out in the cold? 55 gallon (steel) would be the size I'm using.

I was thinking about picking something like this up to use in the winter time to speed up my collection when I'm draining oil out of the drums and into the cubes. Obviously it won't hit 100 degrees in a matter of minutes, but if it would warm it up enough to flow good in say a half hour, I might look into one of them. I'd likely position it on the drum right around the area where the drain is. Maybe hook it up and come back in 30-45 minutes to drain.

Just trying to avoid standing in the cold for an hour while I drain 35-40 gallons.

    Thanks!

Well the one I have is for a 30 gal poly barrel but, besides that, I wouldn't think a heater band will work as you're wanting for that kind of scenario. I live in an area that seldom gets down past freezing so I'm not the person to speak on this with experience to back it up. These things work by transfering heat slowly. IMO you need something more like a heat spear or bucket heater if you're trying to heat oil to pour better outside in the cold. That won't be very efficient.

A 1500 watt heating element takes me approx 2-3 hours to get 40-50 gallons up to approx 140 degrees in 80-90 degree weather. Anything more than 1500 watts you need to be concerned with scorching/burning the oil unless the oil is flowing over the element.

Thanks for the info...that's what I needed to know.

Sounds like these wouldn't be ideal for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'll have to do a bit more research to see what else is out there.

        Thanks!
