  • oil sources drying up!!

Man these renderers are starting to really PISS me off!
Anyone else feeling the squeeze from these renderers starting to offer money to the resturants? I know its been happening in larger metros for awhile but just now happening here in small rural OK.
I just found out my wing fry places are considering a renderers offer but at least the talked to me first and i told them to let me know what the price would be.
He mentioned 15 bucks per quarter per resturant (i have 1 and 3 more opening up in 2 weeks - major source of good oil).
Well 60 bucks a year per location is nothing but it will only get worse from there i am afraid. I already lost the main place i have had for 2 years - you got it, a renderer waved 150 bucks in front of them to sign a new contract...150 bucks? Come on guys, i would have paid them 200 to NOT sign if they had talked to me.

I see a 250 gal. sucker tank in my future. Pull up, drop hose in, suck up 250 gallons in minutes and away i go

Not up against paying for the oil in my neck of the woods. Lately a new company(I guess they are new) have started to pick up oil for free, but so am I so I have no fear. I guess it is just a matter of time though. The way I see it is even if we have to pay for it, we can offer more than a company could since we don't have to turn a profit on it. It does suck to think about having to pay for it though, but oh well. My system has pretty much paid for itself so any oil I can gather from here on out is gravy.

Gravy yes, my system has more than paid for itself...but this is like a bad drug and the very though of decreasing my intake and having to buy some diesel, gives me cold sweats...

Man that really sucks that they did that to you without even talking to you. I am just starting to secure my sources now and I am offering to pay right up front with a contract so I won't have to worry about this happening in the future. I actually found a couple places that want to switch from the big company to sell to me because I am local. The days of free oil are going fast so I am just accepting it and securing my sources with money and contracts. Good luck

Hate to hear that Clay. I haven't experienced it yet, but I'm sure you're right when you say it will only be a matter of time.

I actually was contemplating offering a small restaurant near my folks house a little cash for their oil. They've got someone picking it up for free right now, but I could sure use the oil. Right now, I'm barely squeaking by week to week. I've got a second source I've been working on, but he keeps waiting to see what the renderer is going to pay him for his 10 gallons/week. He signed a 3 month contract right before I started talking to him of course.

I wouldn't offer money up front...i would be sure to ask them to come to me if they ever recieve an offer and i will likely be able to match or beat it. Thats my new strategy i think.

Well, my Dad has asked before is the only reason I've considered offering them a little money. But, at the same time, I'm not about stealing another possible greasers oil source, so I'm riding the fence on talking to them again...

I will mention that to them about the offer though...

Around my area it is very tough to find sources. All large sources are already being paid for by the big national company. Most of the small sources are taken by greasers like us. Like Marv said I don't wanna steal from some local guy trying to save some money on fuel. My best finds have been places where some local guy was getting it and couldn't keep up with the restaurant's supply so they switched to the national company. Once I assure them that I will take it all they let me have it because they want to support local but don't want overflowing barrels or pile of cubies out back. I only offer money if they have a large enough supply to make it worth it and they will sign a contract. In the end I think it will really come down to professionalism, cleanliness and a good relationship with the restuarants.

I pay $1.00 a gallon to 4 Chinese restaurants in the Schenectady area; after buying the truck and the V3 I can't afford for the oil to be the missing piece of the puzzle. The Chinese are pretty quick to jump on a dollar, and I don't mean that in a bad way but money talks and they have turned me on to other restaurants to buy from. They put it back in the cubes for me and have them all ready on Thursday when I make my rounds. I have a diner and a bar that gives to me for free, usually 2 cubes each per week, but I spend money at both places, so it's a win/win for everyone

Waytall it's funny that you mention that...I was actually thinking of the local Chinese all you can eat buffet today. I'm sure they'd have no qualms about being paid for their oil, but I'm afraid the language barrier would be rough.

How was your experience in getting going with those folks?
