  • Overfill Problem

So I did it! I overfilled the RDS tank and had it run down from the fill onto the running board and onto the ground. What a mess! I would guesstimate about a gallon is all that spilled but a gallon of veg on the truck is a gallon more than I want. The weird part is that the gauge read about an 1/8 of a tank below full. So i am looking for guidance. Other than watching the gauge as I was what are some of your techniques to avoid what I accomplished? I use a fill rite pump and nozzle and as far as I know there aren't auto shut off fill nozzles available. I am all ears!

    getting your spill thrill

Flow meter ($39.99 from tractor supply company) it screws on the hose before the nozzle, thus giving accurate measurement.Trust me you only spill good once before you figure out "your" fillup routine and needed equipment.I have the RDS 36 gallon flat cargo area tank in the back of my X,and I over filled only once, luckily I have a Husky liner under tank, and everything except the "burp" was contained to 2 feet by 4 feet by 1 inch deep of goo.The stuff that evaded the liner landed on interior plastics and headliner, good thing the wife wasn't home to see the spill that never happened ,so don't tell her.Good luck with the clean-up,its part of joining the club, everyone does it,and if they say they don't they are lying.Again welcome aboard..............greasy

You can get auto-shutoff nozzles at tractor supply, but I don't know how well they would work with veggie. They just screw onto the end of your hose. If you try it, I wouldn't just walk away the first time. Better be sure it works.

Looks like it does....should take you to a search results page for a search under "fuel nozzles".

I bought mine there as well (it's a manual) and it's worked great so far.

heres how i avoid overfilling. I fill the tank untill its 3/4 full - about 45 to 50 galllons - then i go to the station and top off with diesel and allow there auto shutoff handle to do its job. I can also look down in the tank and see just how full it is and squeeze a little more in there.
Its a good idea to use some diesel mixed in with the vegi to avoid polymerization.
Another thing you can do it take the fuel level sender that came in your tank, out and replace it with an Isspro sender that will read more accurately.

So I want to make sure I understand correctly. The sending unit that came with the RDS tank can be improved upon? I notice that I do have to rock the truck a little bit and it will cause the float in the tank to move in turn adjusting the fuel level. My main tank is Diesel only and then I have the RDS 40 gallon tank.

I have a manual one now and it does work pretty well. From time to time I have problem getting it to start pumping as it seems like there is something in the nozzle that is sticking or something.

Trying to attach a pic of my setup. I have a nylon tube in the fill port for viewing while filling.

that's a really good idea. How hard is that tube to replace as I am sure after time it will be knicked up and possibly worn out from road debris and what not.

This was done as an original setup by my installer. I wipe it off every fill up to get a good view of the vo going in...... I have seen no signs of wear since sept. 08. In fact the black rubber coupling that fits between the tank hole and the hole drilled in the frame was replaced with the same nylon reinforced tube. This stuff can be picked up in any farm store or lowes/home depot. In my opinion it is stronger than the black rubber coupling that came with the system. If I ever need to replace it, It is flexable enough to pull off and slide on to the fill pipe. In cold temps you may need to warm it up a bit to get the give needed to slide it on the fill pipe. If I ever had any issue with wearing, I would probably cut another tube lengthwise and slide over it like pipe insulation to absorb the abuse. I really don't see this as an issue though.
