  • slight leak from vent breather

I've got the 40g Excusion tank with the small breather vent above where the filler goes. Is anyone else having a small leak coming from theirs? I thought it might have been only when it was really full (still shouldn't leak with the rollover valve), but it's still leaving a couple 2-3" diameter drops on the ground after a normal drive, and a thin coating of WVO on the rear axle housing. Any ideas on how to alleviate this? Can I run an extension to a slightly higher location?

    thanks for any suggestions

I haven't put more than 25gal in mine yet at a time (I have the 40gal also) and no dripping whatsoever yet.

did you take the filter off and make sure the plastic float ball didn't get melted or stuck in the down position?

Other than that an extension or baffle would be the only other choice.

Not much room for an extension really. You could try stuffing the filter with oiled steel wool(clean of course). This might catch some of the sloshing oil and prevent the filter from getting soaked.

But again that ball should be stopping 99.44% of oil I would think

Hope I can fill mine up w/ no issue. I will fill it up next week.

Also- Are you sure your fill hose isn't seeping?

the only vent mine had was a 1" check ball with a k&n filter on top

sounds like we have the same tank/breather setup. I'm sure it's not coming from the filler, because I can feel oil on the top of the tank all around the breather.
I did check the ball when I received the tank, but now that I think of it, I inadvertantly overtightened the hose clamp on the breather and it cut into the base of it a little bit. Not sure if that would cause this issue though.

            Drew,
I had the same problem. I overtightened the breather, & it must have gotten crushed under cab or something, "cause I when i dropped tank to move it 2" fwd, I found that the filter actually dropped off and rolled down driveway when tank hit ground, it had ripped right off, and yes I was havin' leaks at 35 gallons, probably max capacity on 40 gallon tank, maybe even 30 to be safe. I stuck a clear reinforced w/ red line marine 1" hose on @ 2' long, got an aftermarket small filter/crankcase breather, stuck 1" of hose (of same kind of marine hose, but 3/4") ) inside end of 1" hose, then stuck filter in & hose clamped. Filter sits nicely up under truck, better for high water traversing anyway, I live in Florida, lots of swamps and high water from storms. In fact when a hurricane comes, I have a 4x4 & don't have to worry about gas stations pumping (or not) :fuel any more!

thanks for the tip grady, I looked under it again tonight and I think I know the area that you're talking about. Looks to be about 8-10" higher than the top of the tank.

here's a picture of what I did, for anyone else that might be having the same problem

That's about 16" of 1" ID braided PVC hose, with a standard valve cover breather on the end. The breather has a 1" male stub on it, so it makes the assembly very easy. A couple hose clamps and zip ties, and you're done.

It's not dripped a DROP since I installed it, I even filled the tank and had no issues.

thanks again for the suggestion grady

                  well 5.0,

Went out this am and my rear axle is really clean after a WVO wipedown !!

I have to drop the tank anyway so I'll do your vent mod then.

mine seems to be working, just have to make sure not to overfill the tank like I did last time, cause it still finds it's way up the tube

Thanks for the suggestion. I will add this to mine as well. Anyone have a part no. or other info on the valve cover/breather? Is is something Pep Boys would carry?

                      thanks!

I used one almost idenitcal to this one: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
It's a push-in style breather with a 1" port on it, which is the same size as the vent fitting on the tank. I think PepBoys would have one.

I got the 1" PVC hose from Lowes.

40 gal ex tank from rds. sounds like a typical problem. What is the vent's function? Is it vacuum, pressure releif or both. It seems that if it were one or the other, a one way valve in the extension tube may help. Anyone know for sure. I need to do this fix and want to do it once...... especially if I need to drop the tank. With a full tank, I am creating some nasty oil spots in the driveway.

was anyone able to reach the filter to put an extension on without dropping the tank?

I was able to do the fix without dropping the tank. The only time I've had any leak since is when I way overfilled the tank (oil all the way up the filler tube), and even then it wasn't as bad as the leak when the vent breather was directly on the top of the tank.
