  • Very Odd Question

On my 2001 F250 7.3 (bought used) there is an inline fuel filter between the diesel tank and the fuel pump. Now everything we can find does not show a fuel filter in this location. The fuel filter is up front and it has the called for filter on it.

We are getting ready for a long trip and were changing all the filters prior to leaving. Now we have a snag.

The only filter I could find at the auto parts place that even looked like this one is a gas filter.

Any one know if there is supposed to be a filter there and if so what it's number is? Any reason why someone would have added this filter if it is not supposed to be there?

Tanya- No that filter did not come from the factory. The only other filter in the OEM system for a 7.3 is actually inside the inlet of the factory fuel pump. If you can't find a number on it to replace it, I would remove the filter, then back flush it to see what comes out. Who knows why it is there, maybe some yahoo poured sawdust in the tank in the trucks past or who knows what. At anyrate, see what comes out of the filter when backflushed. If nothing, then likely it was just an overparanoid owner and simply replace to maintain fuel system integrity. If in fact some garbage comes out, then a prefilter of sorts in in order. Most parts stores carry a universal prefilter. Try Napa over autozone for someone who may know what they are talking about.

is it a fitch catalyst or similar filter,or a magnetic particle filter. My DT444 had one of each from the factory. That was a 36,000 lb truck, but the engines are same block, same fuel specs.Maybe some one was a trucker and knew better(I installed both on my old cummins).......good luck

Thank you Jason, Will pull it off again and backflush it and also go out to Napa on Monday this may be a prefilter of some sort but the guys at Advance Auto had no clue. Course the customer had less of a clue than they did so we were all hopeless.

greasyX I have no clue as there are no markings on the canister at all. It looks just like the inline gas filter on my sons suburban. I will go look those kind of filters up on line. Thanks for the suggestions.

the fitch has a screen printed label, that wears off with time.It will be a bronze color. The magnetic particle filter looks like a regular filter with two small magnets(one on each end)use a magnet or piece of steel to detect this one................good luck
