  • Replacement Key

I have one key (chipped) for my 02 ex. I want to get a remote starter for the cold NY mornings. My question is do you need to get replacement keys directly from the dealer if you only have one key? I see ford keys on ebay, but who can program these if you only have one? Also, any recommendations on a good remote starter for the 7.3 diesel? And lastly, what if anything has to be done special to avoid messing with the shutdown system on the V3? Any input will be appreciated.
    Thanks

My 7.3 is not chipped, so I can't comment there other than my wife's car is chipped and she had to spend $150 to get a spare key... and then use that on her starter.

My Viper alarm has a car starter built into it and it does not effect the performance of the V3, that I've experienced in the last month or so since I've been using the starter. Shut-down is normal... because that is a key-off function, not a motor on function.

One thing I did notice is, no matter how warm the truck is... the V3 won't turn on until the key is turned to the ON position. My truck was warm, high idle, and the V3 turned on once I hit the key. Oh well.

Bill, my understanding has always been that chipped keys must come from the dealer. But, admittedly it's been a few years since I've needed one, so I could be wrong. There might be other places out there now that can program them.

A friend of mine put a remote start on his truck and the chipped key went under the dash with the starting unit and he had a regular unchipped ket to unlock the steering wheel. So as far as I know you don't need another chipped key.
