  • Crossing boarder US/ Cdn

HI I am thinking of driving into the states for a holiday and I live in Halifax Nova Scotia does anyone have any experience with taking oil over not just in the tank but say an extra 100 to 150 on the back. Now I always get pulled over and have to go in as I am Australian (living in Canada 11 years) have to do the pastport thing all the time.

Part of me says I should just take enough to the boarder fill up the tank before I cross and have no spare on the back. I figure it will not look good. Or I should just drive the long way as I have to go back into Canada as going to wifes grandfather who lives on boarder but in Canada.

Any help with boarder crossing would be great to know as I plan to take the truck down as it is free to drive.....I love it.

    Thanks.

I have personally spoken to customs about this and it is not a problem. I was looking into buying large quantities in Quebec and transporting back to the US. They told me that as long as I was using a safe container that was clearly labeled ("used" vegetable oil, it is best to avoid the word "waste") and the value of the oil was less than $2000 it would be no problem. When you cross, an agent from the FDA may want to have a look at what your hauling but that is it. I do have a sheet they gave me with a tariff # for vegetable oil. I will look for it and post it up here if I find it.

I use collapsable water bags(camping supplier store $7) they hold 5-6 gallons.I have a cargo hauler on the back of the X for long hauls, and can fit seven of these on there easily.I stop at derbyline (newport) VT,top off my 36 gallon tank, and fold up the containers and put them in a garbage bag and then in a back pack amonst my luggage.Operating this way I can go from Ashland NH to Quebec City PQ and back without using extra diesel.Depending where you are going in the states, you could be able to find oil at your destination.I am in central NH and would offer 55 gallon run out of my centrifuge free of charge if ya are coming through my neck of the woods..............greasy

Last time I crossed into the Canada from the US I was carrying an extra 55 gallons in a barrel in the bed of my truck.

The border agent in Canada just asked me what was in the drum. I told him it was used vegetable oil that powers my truck. He looked at me and said "so you are telling me that your vehicle runs on biofuel?"
          I shrugged and said "sure"

He handed me back my passport and told me to have a great trip.

On the way back into the states the border official didn't even glance at the empty barrel laying on its' side in the back of the truck.

          I wouldn't worry about it.

Great then thats what I will do. I don't want to run around getting oil when I have enough at home. The wife would just love it if I said I was off to get oil on vacation if you know what I mean.

How far south are you coming? I'm sure some of us could hook you up with some oil on the way.

Any chance you ever found the tarriff #? I am heading up to Golden, BC in a few weeks, and want to be as legit as I can so I don't get messed with too much! Thanks!

                      Bio,
If it makes you feel any better, I crossed on Hwy 93 at Roosville back in august and didn't even get funny questions from border guards going either way. My tank is sitting in plain view in the bed.

Thanks, that makes me feel better about the trip. I was also planning on filling a few 15 gallon plastic drums with oil so I can do the whole trip self-sustained, so that's what I'm really worried about...from the previous posts it sounds like it shouldn't be a problem, but you never know and I don't want to miss out on my first helicopter ride!

Blue, I travel over the border all the time. (I'm in NS also) I carry 5 gal totes in the bed of the truck, or in the trunk of the Jetta. I have never had any problems, I just say I burn biofuel.
