Just ordered my PHP Gryphon from Bill (www.phptune.com) after speaking with him live about some custom veg tunes.
He sets his powercurves to come on as the engine warms, so no worries about running a hot tune on a cold engine (important for me in the winter and since I'm often running to fire calls on short notice). On the veg tunes, he'll match that to mimic the start on diesel, then switchover to veg. Also, the timing will be a little further advanced to deal with the heavier oil and the idle will be a little higher to prevent wet-stacking. Plus the programmer offers the ability to play with shift points and timing a bit to optimize it even further once it's in. Also, once you order a custom tune from him, he can set up a "three-tune set" with any of his standard tunes in any order to download/update the programmer over time. The only disadvantage I can see with the programmer vs. the shift-on-fly chip is can't take advantage of his "high-idle" or "whisper" tunes since changing programs takes about three minutes to switch over.
FYI - they also offer a 6-position shift-on-fly chip with a chip burner so you can play with ALL of their custom tunes (they call it the F.U. chip) for you guys who already have guages set up. So, then folks can order custom tunes (like veg tunes) from him & upload them to the chip w-out having to take it out and ship it back/forth, etc.
I can't wait to get that sucker in there! The programmer ships right away with three of his "standard" tunes in it & then the custom tunes come in a few weeks; he's a little backed-up on custom tune orders right now.
My "final" setup will be:
1) 80HP Performance for Veg
2) 80HP Performance for #2
3) 65HP Tow for Veg
