  • 1st Filter Change (5,500 miles)

I finally got around to changing my first filter out and I was right around 5,500 miles. I know this is no where near what some guys claim, but I am really please with the number considering how little effort I put into filtering...

I get pretty crappy oil: very heavy PHO, very thick with huge hunks of crap, french fries and breading. I barely prefilter this at all (sometimes a 600 micron buck strainer, sometimes NOTHING). Then it takes a spin through the simple centrifuge at about 150 degrees and 5-10 gpm. DONE!

was the filter plugging or did you just decide to change it?

It was during one of the more recent cold spells...

The green light would come on for 20 seconds then quit. I figured why push it.

I think I am going to take your approach Clay and just change it every oil change. For Thirteen bucks, why tempt fate. Also, this requires me to stress much less about prefiltering and spend more time drinking beer in the sunshine.

          Thats awesome.

I found some locally for just under $9.00

Do a Google search for Donaldson retailers near you and even if the part number isn't on their site, call them and see what they can do for you. I've been taking the approach of saying "I can get them for $9.50 but I'm looking for a local source that I can pick them up from" ... that encourages them to not jack up the price.

That's good mileage Fast...way more than I've ever been able to reach.

However, this last filter that's on there seems to be lasting longer than the others. While I haven't been runing VO, there has been a few times where I've put 10-15 gallons of diesel in there and burned it through.

Wonder if diesel helps prolong filter life?

I'd bet I've got between 1500-2000 miles on this one. My best has been ~2500 miles. All others haven't been near that.

I wonder why y'all have such short filter life? My first V3 filter lasted 15k miles and I get 5-10k out of the little WIX on my F350 as long as my oil is dry...

I don't change filters until FP becomes an issue. When I see below 40psi on hard acceleration or long grades is when I change F350 filter. New filter gives me 80psi at idle and maybe drops to 70psi, belching black smoke from the tailpipe and smokin' the tires! Eventually, the 70psi drops to 65, then 60 and finally I can not accelerate slow enough to keep above 40psi. (Idle pressure still returns to 80psi) Just changed last filter at about 5-6k and I attribute that to the 'bottom of the barrel' CRAP fuel I put in before this trip. (VERY high fats, solid at 70* and prolly wouldn't 'pass' the HPT )

I heat and settle (only 100-110*) then pump thru fuel filters (2mic final filter) into trucks.

I have same filter head I use in F350 in my pre-filtering set-up. That way I can yank a 'good' filter before a road trip, but still get my 'moneys worth' out of it. I flow these filters there until they just trickle, I get every penny out of'em!

Well, I think some of my early filter troubles was probably attributed to some junk in the tank from the manufacturing. After I finally got all that cleaned out of the system (I think), it seems to be doing better. The filter I've got on there now seems to be doing well, so I hope my mileage starts to increase a bit when running oil all the time.

I also here lately have been allowing the oil to set much longer (in the cubes, pre-filter barrel, HWH, etc) before using it. I think that helps in allowing all the crud and water to seperate to the bottom. I just always make sure I pour off the good oil from the top of the cubes and leave any fats for later when I can heat them up good in the summer time heat and just pour them through.

You'd be amazed how much difference allowing the cubes to sit for an extended period of time will make. My oil looks like coffee when I pour it in the pre-filter barrel, but it's crystal clear. Not mirky or milky at all - at least not until I start getting into the bit of fats that have settled at the bottom.

And, I use the tried and true method of the Frybrid still like Clay, so I think that does a good job too.
