  • The Urge To Purge

I had to change my Donaldson last night on my way home from Yonkers, NY. The filter had unknown miles on it since I hadn't been running wvo since before Xmas because I haven't been able to process any - 'nother story.

Since I found a guy In Queens that I could buy processed oil from I figured I'd run the filter until it was time to change and then note the mileage on the new filter.

On the way home the green light started to wink at me, so I knew it was time. I changed the filter and the light kept winking. Huh. Fortunately, I had been talking to skyskijason so I rang him up. He says I probably needed to purge the system. I had the manual with me so I pulled over and went through the sequence to purge. All seemed well.

I get back on the highway and call Jason to tell him all is well and the light starts winking again. Ballz! So I pull off and do it again; same results. I do it a 3rd time and finally the light stayed green all the way home. Thank you Jason for pointing out the obvious to me! I'm guessing for some reason my system suddenly got a big gulp of air.

Now don't think I'm a simpleton for not knowing to do the purge sequence; I've gone through alot of filters since installing my system, that's also another story, and I have never once had to purge the system; all I'm saying is for any new customers that experience the same issue, pull over and purge!!!

While checking to see if I had maybe pulled a wire loose, I noticed that my V3is nasty dirty; is there any cleaning or maintenance I should be doing under there?

It is good to be running on wvo again!

Glad to hear Jason was able to help you out WayTall...I'll have to remember to do that myself if it ever gives me any issues.

As far as cleaning, from what I've heard, just about nothing works as well as hot, soapy Dawn dishwater. At least that's what I'm going to use once the cold, wet weather is done.

    Whenever that will be....

Ok, good, but is there anything we should be protecting? Is it necessary to clean, or just a good idea?

Well, I'm not sure if it's necessary, but I would think it'd make servicing a little more enjoyable. That way you don't have grit and dirt falling in your face while you lay under the truck. Not to mention that it'd help cut down on the dirt that might get into the manifold when changing the filter and what not.

As far as protecting anything, I'd imagine that if the manifold and all the electronics can survive under there in a heavy rainstorm (and mud, dirt, etc), I'd think it'd be okay with a little no pressure soap and water.

But, I suppose you could always put plastic around anything you didn't want to soak.

Should be fine. I blast mine with pressure washer (along with the rest of uderside of truck) everytime I wash truck(s). For the baked on stuff, a scraper then some diesel from a spray bottle and stiff brush does the trick for me - rinse with diluted simple green or purple power. Those 2 cleaners will 'damage' aluminum in strong solution and extended contact time, so use carefully!
