  • looking for oil - GA to NJ/NYC

Sorry 'bout the double post! (I posted this msg on another forum)

Looks like I'm going to Linden, NJ. Sounds like a horrible place, but I'm happy to have some place to go work at this point!! Leaving Wed/Thurs...

My supplies here at home are scarce and I gotta leave as much as I can for Lori to do her commute to school until I get back!

I will go up 75 to Frankfort, KY
    I-64 across KY to WV,
I-79 thru WV to (almost) PA,
    I-68 and I-70 to MD
and then I-81 to hell, I mean NJ (almost NYC).

Hey, how bad can it be? I survived 1/2 a winter in Seattle last year for goodness sake...

Can someone please tell me some encouraging things about NJ/NYC in Feb/Mar??

If you have a little VO to spare or are just close to my route - I'd love to stop by and say HI! I have not been to this part of the world in a looong time, looking forward to making some new friends! (VO not req'd)

I often get long weekends, so if I can't go home - I go find cool things to do nearby. All suggestions are appreciated!

If you can't find anything (I'm way too far out of your way) there is that really nice bio plant in PA or Ohio that someone (maybe Jamie/Horsemover) just posted up.

Jason, I'm a bit out of your way, but if you need some to make it to the house, you're welcome to stop by!

Just let me know. I've got some saved up, need to filter it, but it's here.

Hey hey hey...don't be asking for oil from us New Jersey boys while bashing our state at the same time! J/K :chuckles: Linden's not the nicest place in the world as its home to most of our refineries, but that's the part of New Jersey most folks think of instead of this:

            Ken Lockwood Gorge

Which is within walking distance of my house. We're actually not going to be around, otherwise I'd say stop by though its a little out of the way. I just had to stick up for Jersey.

hehehe, I've always heard 10% of the state gave the rest a bad name! Seriously, I always manage to find the best of everywhere I go. I end up working with locals, so I seek out 'that guy' who is most enthusiastic about his home. He always knows the coolest spots!

There is a campground/RV park in Jersey City - that should be fun! If there is a break in the smog, I should be able to see Statue of Liberty from RV. It just seems like a strange place to 'camp'. May be putting caps in would-be muggers and car jackers instead of swatting mosquitos, eh?

I'll have 2-3 weeks there and then go over to Riverhead for 2 -3 weeks. Likely have several short days (couple hours early AM) and at least a few days between the projects. After that, they may want me to go to LA or Seattle again for all I know. Time to start laying on the VO miles again! :chuckles:

Thanks for the offers y'all. I should have almost enough oil to get there and I'll be there long enough to hopefully collect/filter enough to get to next destination! Still like to visit if you're nearby!!

You're a hop, skip, and a jump from New York City-there's no shortage of stuff to see and do there. Liberty State Park/Ellis Island is pretty cool too.

That's actually a pretty nice area. The Jersey City waterfront is very developed with million dollar condos, marinas, etc... Once you go inland a lot of the area is still pretty poor though. You'll be fine. Linden is a pretty blue collar working class town between the refinery workers, longshoremen, etc...

Thanks for the tips! I work in large, aboveground fuel storage tanks for oil and pipeline companies lately. Basically construction management/QC/contractor safety/etc. Most of the places I've been last couple years are the terminals where the trucks that bring gas/diesel to the gas stations fill up. Tanks are from 1.5 - 5 million gallons and must be cleaned, inspected and repaired about every 10 years. (lets keep this little 'VO thing' a secret, mmmkay?)

I usually use a 55 gal drum and a water heater element on an extension cord to heat (shoot for 110-120*) and settle (24-48 hrs) oil. I pull a sample from about 12" or so off bottom of drum and HPT. If it passes, (as minimum) I pump thru a 2 mic spin-on filter into truck. (Like to use 10mic Goldenrod before the 2 mic 'cause they cost ALOT less!!) I have prolly processed close to 1/2 the oil for the last 80k miles in my truck like this.

I use this little Honda 4 cycle 1" pump to collect and filter 'on the road'. When collecting, I pump thru 5 gal bucket-size nylon paint strainers (about 150 mic):

                          skyski,

If you are ever in North Texas let me know. I am not sure we have many aboveground tanks here. We have pleanty of pipelines for natural gas though. I should always have some oil to spare so drop me a line if you need some.

Thanks man. I was supposed to got to Witchita Falls, TX last month. There are 1000's of the kind of tanks I work in there. I never know where I'll be next! I have made some cool friends traveling around. I'm visiting one now and pilfering about 100 gals as we speak!

Getting a late start again today - I'll drive 'till I get sleepy and roll in to camp mid-day tomorow.

lol, another late start. Time flies visiting with friends ya don't see often! Got over 100 gals of VO in tank and another 60ish dewatered to filter into truck later!! Yeeehaa!

Left home 500 miles ago with under 1/4 tank of diesel. You'd think I woulda run out by now, eh? Saving weight...
