Who here knows the legality of straight pipe exhaust on a truck over 8500 pounds, but under 11000?I want to do straight pipe on the GreasyX with dual exhaust out under bumper.Should I just gut my Exhaust or BTM it? Where I live several people have done this on trucks but I haven't seen it on an X.The benefits would be SOUND and better MPGs,also running on WVO 95% of the time so no extra pollution would be generated.PS My X is a 2000 without a cat,so that makes it all that much easier. In my state they have never hooked my X up to smog or OBD or any thing, they always tell me its ":too heavy",and exept,is this true?.....................greasy

In New Jersey they only inspect diesels under 10K lbs for safety-funny story: When I installed my V3 I had to disconnect my downpipe from the exhaust and broke a bolt in the process, so I couldn't reinstall the downpipe until I got a new clamp. I tried a couple of parts stores and all they had was 3" (I since found out that Tractor Supply carries all sizes of clamps), so I just went to inspection with the downpipe open. Surprisingly it's not that loud, even at WOT. I figured I would either fail and have 45 more days to fix it or pass-lo and behold I passed! Since with the open downpipe my truck whistles like a 6.0L I still haven't reconnected the downpipe. :chuckles:
    Currently dieselless!

My '03 7.3 is straight piped, and it passes inspection here in VA. I don't know the legality involved with the weight and all though. I have the 4" mbrp single, and I have yet to hear a truck that sounds better. You will love it!

Can't help w/the legality where you live, but I've heard a turbo qualifies as a 'muffler' in some places?? Worst case scenario a BTM is EASY to add later, just make sure ya leave enough straight pipe for it!

My truck has been straight-piped (stock exhaust) for about 150k miles - I could never go back. In truck, barely noticable w/windows up. Windows down is rewarded w/mechanical music - especially WOT pulling a grade hitting 25+ psi of boost!! Out of truck, I do not feel guilty idling out of campground - them 12v's are still ALOT louder stock. Now, at WOT blah, blah, blah - I'm sure the little punks in tuners have learned to avoid the right lane w/a diesel by now!! It's gotta be punishing, loud and smokey!!:chuckles:

If I drove our Excursion, it'd be 4" turbo-back and no muffler.

But under the bumper? Too hick for me, the corners or steep angle under rear 1/4 panel mitered to body lines.

I was thinking stacks replacing the running boards would be sweet. Kind of like what hotrodders do with lake pipes. Maybe put a heat shield where you get in/out of the doors. I doubt I'd actually ever spend the money to do it, but it would be unique!
