  • Another victim of oil theft!

Well, looks like someone has been stealing my oil. Been almost three weeks now and the level in my barrel at my primary source hasn't moved.

So, Friday evening I rode over there and talked to the manager. He stated that they'd been burning through oil like crazy (added another fryer) and he knew for sure they'd been dumping it. He asked if I checked the old render's dumpster, which I had not, so we walked out there. Bone dry.

My only guess is that an individual pumped it out the top (I have locks on the drains), or the oil company showed up, saw they had no oil, and decided they'd take it from my barrel.

However, we fixed that. Moved the barrel inside the restaurant. They have a chemical room in the back of the restaurant and luckily he already had a stand of perfect size in there. So, we just moved the barrel in and I took my stand back to the house.

So, now they can't take my oil...and, I get to stand in the warmth while I drain my oil. Not to mention it'll make it much faster since the oil will stay warm.

Sweet ending Marv, i wish i could put my barrels inside...its a health hazard in my cases. I guess in a chemical room maybe its not...have to wait and see what the health inspector says.

Yeah, so far it's turned out okay. I too have concerns about the health department, but we'll see what happens. I'm hoping as long as they see it's seperated from all foods, that I'll be okay.

I did mention that to the owner, but he didn't seem too concerned, so I hope he's right.

Might i suggest getting a lid that seals tight?
That would keep the health depatment happy. Used oil will draw roaches and thats the last think he wants.

I remember watching mythbusters when they were experimenting with WVO in an unmodified mercedes. If I recall correctly, they scooped some old oil out of a barrel that was in the restaurant. So that was one place storing the oil inside.

I know it would be really, really rotten, but why not try putting a little lye in your barrel. If it is a fellow greaser stealing the oil, that will put an end to it.

Good point Clay, I hadn't considered that. I might just use one of the original barrel lids. I believe they sealed somewhat air tight and had strong, lockable rings that went around the edge.

Haha...well, I guess that would be one way to curb someone from stealing it.

With my luck though, I'd forget and get it in my truck....

Thats the first thing i though of but then again i have been through that and i wouldn't do that to my worst enemy. I would put a video camera on it for a week and play it back hopeing to get a liscence plate so i could pay a visit t o his house ..maybe personally deliver a few gallons of vegi oil to his doorstep....literally on the step....and porch....and sidewalk.... Can be cleaned up but its gonna take him awhile and i would do it in the cold of winter.

^ cringes at the thought of what that WVO would do inside a gasoline engine.

I actually had a place throw away two of my barrels. I'd received permission from the kitchen manager at a hospital to put barrels out back and he showed me where he wanted them. A couple of weeks later I get a call from a guy in the maintenance dept telling me I have to come take the barrels. Said he just was in a meeting with my point of contact and that guy didn't know anything about the barrels. Ass. Ok, no worries. I told him I was out of town and would be down 2 days later to get the barrels. I show up 2 days later.....no barrels. I find the guy I spoke with and he tells me he threw them out. Said his boss said to get rid of them immediately. After explaining to him the amount of time that went into fabricating the barrels (lots of welding) plus the expense of the barrels, material, and locks, he didn't have much to say except "Oh,well."

The only thing I could say was "Oh, well. Hopefully for you I won't find out what car you drive and take $200 out of your tires."

Man, that sucks. I can't believe someone would actually go to the trouble to toss them in the trash.

Hope you returned the favor in some form or fashion.

Thats just mean...present the guy with a bill for each barrel and tell him you will take him to small claims court if he doesn't pay up. The thought of hassling with court will hopefully be enough to convince him to get his wallet out.
