  • Need some more horses

OK guys, now that the X is "my" truck, and the wife has a chipped WVO Libby,I need some goodies for my 7.3 X.I would like a tuner, which one?I hear alot about DP Tuner, are they the best for this application=Donaldson AIS,Walker BTM,Stock injectors,V3(Duh),and a heavy foot.I also need gauges,to protect my precious.I know some of you guys have good set-ups,now I need one.It will be my daily driver, with double duty towing(4000lbs of WVO),Firewood, and some 4 wheelers.Perhaps my diesel porsche project once in a while.I live in the White mountains of NH (Mt.washington,Franconia Notch, and alot of mountains)4000-6000 feet above sea-level.So needless to say I NEED the extra horses without burning alot of extra GO-GO juice to get there. All input appreciated...............thanks.....greasy

I've been DP-Tuned for over a year now. No regrets - other than not buying it sooner.

I don't know how my truck has survived the abuse, but its holding in there. I can smoke 40" tires from a dead stop with no brake torque. Sometimes all the way accross an intersection. I'm still running factory 4.10s and factory stock everything else, over 150k on it all.

I didn't see an exhaust listed. Those are highly recommended. I've reduced my exhaust to the factory downpipe and a stack (under the truck) with no muffler/cat and the EGTs are still higher than I want them when I'm in a race or something. You should get an exhaust even if you don't get the tuner... I just don't have the $$$ for one right now. You could probably get away with just a downpipe.

This tuner is allowing me to beat "sporty" cars. Eclipse GT, V6 Mustangs... and the like. The DP-Tuner is the only performance product on my truck.

I've hauled some loads... but honestly, I don't know what it was like to haul with the stock tune.

Jody at DP-Tuner is a great guy. When you call him you will be talking to the guy who is burning your tune, for you... not a salesman.

i second what Jack said...DP tunner, open exhaust, also, look into a good cold air intake.
Guages...that comes to personal preference...they all do the same thing but with a little different look.

        Hi-horse x

Thanks for your input guys,I do have the AIS,with zoodad installed already,I travel ALOT of dirt roads. My WVO supplier is 2 miles up a dirt road,so I believe the AIS to be good insurance(If it is good enoughfor desert duty,it'll work for me)I was thinking BTM for stealth, would a full exhaust be defeated by the AIS?The tuner sounds like what i need,Damn f&F cars allllwayys want to race a big X,sitting on Rims(blacked out 18").I would like around 325 real world horsepower, with some turbo whine and throaty exhaust sound.Since selling my hot-rod 1st gen cummins,I got the jones for POWER TO the PAVEMENT.Can the set me up with a tune the advances timing for complete WVO combustion @ High Idle? Thanks again looks like I'll start by calling Jody.......jack,what was the name of your WVO tune?................greasy

Consider getting a 6.0 then...thats less than stock HP
My 6.0 with SCT tunner....425 HP estimated.

3rd for DP-Tuner, I was unaware of "custom" files when I started and now have spent twice the money for half the results. I have ridden in 2 trucks with Jodys tunes and the are sooo muck better. Plus if you do a turbo or sticks DP can compensate for any other mods. I am stuck with what I have till I sell it, I want single shot injectors for the WVO but not till I get better tunes.

              hahahaha,clay

As I was typing that I knew ya would say something about the 6oh.Its sorta like the old ford or chevy forum of yesteryear. They both have strong and weak spots.I now 7.3s from trucking days so I can wrench it a little bit.For me the 6oh is a little newfangled for my taste,so i'll pay jody for tunes, instead of ford for whatever they want to blame this week(international, fuel,WVO,headbolt supplier, stereo provider,oh and turbo supplier).I stick with what i know, old Iron for me.But i appreciate the thought, unforunately 6oh X's were pricey, and still under warrenty when i was shopping for an X...................greasy

My tunes are pre-WVO, but it is my understanding that he has WVO tunes now. I have to give him a call, I hear he has all sorts of awesome tunes now.

Drive-Thru Tune - quiets it down... I could use that.

Don't worry Greasy... after all those 6.0s have popped and gone back to hell, us 7.3'rs will still be trucking.

I see jody has the f-5 for $199,the f-6 is $399.What is the difference, and is it worth it to pay $200 more?.Without upgraded injectors(just aftermarket exhaust and a AIS intake, what would ya reccomend for tunes?................greasy

I have an F-5 and I have 5 settings used:
1 - Stock - but enhanced by Jody
                    2 - 60Tow
                    3 - 80Econo
                    4 - 120Race
                    5 - 140Smoke

I have absolutely no complaints. If I did it again I would get rid of the stock tune and the 60 tow and get something else. I didn't have time last night to see what he offers these days, but I would probably get something that I would use more. Like the drive-thru tune and maybe a lumpy idle tune or something.

F6 is USB upgradeable - don't have to send Jody yer chip (and live w/stock - OMG PLEASE NOT THAT!!!!!) for new tunes, ie injectors, big oil, turbo, etc.

Jody's about an hour away - I've been trying all year to get down there for some live tuning - on VO of course. He was anxious to write some 'VO tunes' we all could use...

Tunes - I have hi-idle, 40tow hi-altitude, 60tow, 80econo, 100 performance in F350. I had a 120race w/stock injectors, but the 120 w/singles never 'cleaned up', I like the obnoxious BLACK smoke to go away w/15psi or so of boost - so Jody dailed it down a little for me. I had to add the 40 high-alt 'cause I had trouble keeping EGT's in check towing 10k 5ver out west (mostly only isuue over 5k ft) The Excursion has hi-idle, 80econo and 100performance, for now. I was worried about trans life w/any more juice than that. Now after the BTS goes in next spring, so will big oil, stage 2 or 3 single-shots, BB turbo, etc, live tuning and the dyno will dictate what we call the tunes...

I deleted muffler on F350 and never looked back, 130k miles ago. It is NO louder in cab and off-idle sounds different (turbo whistle) but no more DB's for getting out of campground w/o being obnoxious. Lets put it this way, wifey didn't notice for weeks. I went to 4Wheel Parts and asked for a piece of stock exhaust (SS by the way!!) and paid muffler man $40 to cut out muffler and weld peice in. I can't get the $350 SS 4" systems for my truck 'cause it is a Cab Chassis truck and has same frame dim's as F450/550 - or I'd have done that in a heartbeat. NOW, I can't see a big enough difference between straightpipe and 4" to change it.

If I straightpipe the Excursion and Momma ain't happy, well, you know what happens when Momma ain't happy... She'll get a nice 4" kit someday (when she's not lookin').

The AIS was a good choice - the 6637 w/a Pete's cover is second. DO NOT use the K&N drop-in, I did that as soon as I got my truck and 1rst UOA and it came out. I actually finally threw it away just yesterday cleaning shop.

I also have Swamp's Diesel Performance single shot injectors in F350. WOW, now thats a mod ya FEEL in SOTP!!! AND 2-3 mpg gain AND better atomization of fuel (great for VO, imho).

"Big Oil" is next for me. I've been running HPO press gauge for most of this year and I see easily where more oil to the injectors is a good thing, especially when Jody can add it via tuning. I'll prolly do that to Ex before the injectors if they hold up long enough. I'm very sad Bob Riley's 'Pulse' pump didn't work out, I was waiting for it to be dailed in - looks like twin pumps are in order.

Put DiPricol Optix gauges and 4 gauge pillar pods in both PSD's - love'em. $655 shipped from dieselmanor - tell David ya need the SkySkiJason pkg, he's sold a few of'em like that now that I know of. Not listed on the site last time I checked... (don't get mech. fuel pressure gauge)

Thats at least $0.02 for ya!

Oh, and I wouldn't run 1/4 mile w/a 6.0 empty, but hook about 10k to it and I'll make ya cry like a school girl who tinkled in her panties...:chuckles: HP ain't everything!

Noone here is a 6oh hater, they are great trucks ,except when people don't take care of them.I would love that amount of power, but i don't take heartache well(my buddies 6oh sitting at the stealer for 4 months, waiting to be fixed, really tore at his pride in the blue oval). The old 7.3 and I have done at least 500K trucking in f600 and other formats. This was without missing a beat, being driven hard daily.I'd compare this to a good wife,ya don't rush out and get a new one if this one takes care of ya good, even if there is something newer,or better.Me and the 7.3 have good memories of my trucking days(I still think about trucking everytime that turbo spools)When i got in the truck wreck(totalled F-600)the only thing that still worked was that old 7.3,fired right up,with the frame twisted like a pretzel around it.Yes ther are two ways to do everything, but mine is the immortal 7.3 international..............greasy
