  • How much oil do you keep in "reserve"?

I've noticed here lately that some of ya'll keep a pretty good reserve of oil on hand. Here lately I've been making it (barely) week to week, so starting Friday, I decided to run diesel for a month to put back some extra oil. Not really what I wanted to do in terms of money, but I don't like stretching it every week either. Diesel is down to around $3.10-3.12 here, so I figured I'd take advantage of the "price break" (what a joke right?...lol) and stick back as much oil as I can. Plus, I gotta drive to Orlando the first week in December, so that'll take a good bit of oil.

I figure in a month or so, I can probably put back between 150-175 gallons. And, I hope to pick up another source or two this month, so that'll help maybe.

So, how much you guys got laying around or stuck back for hard times?

Also, how many sources are you collecting from?

    Thanks!

      Dang Greasy, that's pretty good...haha.

That being said, how many places do you collect from?

I think I'll update the first post to include that question as well.

      Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you Marv. I don't have a ton of sources, really just enough to keep me going. Pulling my trailer on the weekends kills my supply though. It's my own fault, since I'm only going to a few places that toss it in the original containers for me to pick up. I'll make a super sucker one day and hopefully have plenty of extra on hand.

I would keep burning oil Marv. You can always purchase #2 if you need to and you never know when you will stumble upon a "motherload" source. I typically try to keep (4) 55 gallon drums as reserve but I have to admit that I got behind - used up my reserve and am just starting to replenish it now.

I think he means he should purchase it now while it is cheap. You never know when it will touch $5.00 again.

#2 prices still seem to be on the downward trend around here - I would take the chance and continue to work additional oil sources. You could even take some of the $ you were going to spend on #2 and use it to secure additional oil sources. I hope to not see $5 prices again for awhile but who knows #2 could be $6 after tomorrow

I bought 800+ gallons and I have 400 left right now.

@ 1.65/gallon... and no collecting or filtering, it is very worth while for me to buy it.

Yeah, sounds like we're definitely in the same boat. Up until a couple weeks ago, my one source was doing quite well in keeping me going. But, between a worker dumping my oil in the old renderer's dumpster and a 600+ mile trip out of town, I've fallen behind pretty bad. Now I can't catch up and I hate running out at the end of each week.

A couple more sources are in line, but just haven't got them going yet.

Well, it is hard to run on diesel when I know I've got oil at the house, but I'd like to have (eventually) a 200-300 gallon reserve built up. I won't get there in a month, but I think it'll definitely help in getting it started. Even with the long trip in December.

Wish I could find one of those "motherload" sources...haha. :chuckles:

Yeah, I figure if I'm going to do it, I need to do it now while it's relatively cheap. If #2 continues to drop from now until the end of the year, I might look at going 6 weeks instead of a month. Also depends on if I come across any other large sources of oil.

                        It's a darn shame that I get semi-excited about $3.00/gallon diesel...

Greasy, if you don't mind me asking, what does 2000 gallons from a biodiesel producer set you back?
