  • can I run #2 heating oil?

I have an opportunity to buy a decent volume of #2 heating oil for a pretty good price, and I was just wondering if I could run this in my truck, or thru the V3?
I don't know SQUAT about heating oil, so pardon my ignorance, just hoping to jump on a good deal if I can.

    Nonono

That heating oil does not contain any lubricate properties at all. That would be the quick way to needing injectors.I to was given that chance last year to buy old stock(#2HHO),upon researching discovered not economicly viable,it would cost alot more in the long run.You would be better off buying OFF road diesel and run it in your V3,not as cheap, but cheaper than injectors.....Greasy

Well, my opinion about putting it in heated tank is NO.

As for diesel tank, well maybe. First, the red dye is a very expensive ticket and it could take many tanks of no-dye to make it undetectable - it is designed that way! Second, this fuel CAN have very high sulpher, depending on where it came from and when. High sulpher fuel will make crankcase oil acidic faster, increasing wear. More frequent oil changes and UOA's recommended...

Don't use red diesel...if you get dipped, you will be very, very sorry you did.

How much heating oil are you talking about?
Maybe you could use it in a kero heater in the garage or shop?

            It's 140 gallons, at $1.50/gal.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll stay away from it. Just thought I'd ask!

Depends on what state you're in I guess. Posted on our OFF-ROAD pumps it says fines up to $1000. Which would mean if you got away with it for a year, which I did, you would pay for the fine in savings. I never got dipped, and the 10 or so friends I know running it never got dipped. The friends I have who were dipped, some several times, were driving work trucks... or trucks with transfer tanks. Landscapers.. etc.

I'm pretty sure $1.50 is cheap. You could try posting it on Craigslist for $2.50 and see if anyone bites. You could make a couple bucks re-selling it.

That's probably not a bad idea right there. I'm not sure of the price of heating oil, but with winter coming on, you might could turn a profit.

Here in NC the fine is $10,000. I wouldn't take the chance. They tried to give me a ticket for running untaxed, undyed fuel for the WVO, but I beat the ticket and they had to refund the fine.

So what kind of fine was you facing for the "untaxed/undyed WVO" fuel?

The fine for untaxed, undyed was $1500, but they didn't have a leg to stand on. I had used up my source of oil, so I had just filled up both tanks with petrol. They wouldn't show me the lab test and only said that it was high in sulfur. I explained to his boss that WVO doesn't have sulfur and if it was high, they needed to check the flying J about 5 miles down the road. It took 14 months to get this straight, but it was worth it. I made a copy of the refund check and mounted it on the wall in my shop.

Where did the $10,000 come from? I know for commercial trucks the fine is larger than $1,500... but was yours $1,500 or $10,000?

I just know people who were dipped, don't know anyone who has ever been caught.

The fines are different for the different fuels, less fine for red fuel then clear-green.This is done so Commerical truckers don't get off-road sold to them for "the Tractor at the farm",and put it in there Tractor trailer and run it down the road. The red fuel is usaully kerosene or a mixture with lubricates added(Kerosene has no lubricative properties). This is mostly people with pick-ups and Diesel Suvs. They just go and get kero in 5 gallon tanks mix in some stanadyne and run it.The justification of more fine is more money lost(18 wheeler uses much more fuel, and actually makes more money at the same time).this is why you see 18 wheelers and commerical rigs getting there tanks "sticked",and not you or I,hope this sheds some light on why not to run anything but #2(besides WVO of course)............................greasy

Seems like I've heard this as well, but I'm not sure if there is any truth to it.
