  • Fuel pressure upgrade sending unit install location

Just posting this here to see if someone can help before DFA opens back up on Monday. My fuel pressure upgrade kit that was on backorder showed up on Friday. I went to install it this afternoon, but no instructions were included. Any idea where DFA recommends installing the sending unit? There are two empty ports on the V3, but both of them are close enough to other compenents that the sending unit won't fit. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Eric

install the sending unit where the schrader valve (bicycle stem) currently is. You will need an 1/8" npt elbow. You can get it at any hardware store.

Use one of the spare wires (DFA recommends the yellow one) and intsall a ring lug connector on it then bolt it on the sender.

You will find the other end of the yellow wire in the timer card harness under the dash.

I just removed mine. My elbow tightened too much... or not enough. But never tightened where I could put the solenoid on. I'm going to buy another elbow and see if the threads are different.

I also used the blue wire. Could there possibly be a difference?

should be no difference between the blue and yellow. They are both just spare wires that are blunt cut at both ends.

I hate to ask the obvious, but did you ground the V3? if you are having erratic signal or no signal at all, then you are probably missing your ground.

Well I ran to the hardware store, picked up an elbow, installed the sending unit, and...nothing. The gauge will jump just a touch to say 1 PSI, but then just stay there. I used the yellow wire on both ends and connected to the S terminal on the back of the gauge. I know I currently have good pressure as the system is running great. Ran out of time to do any more troubleshooting. I'll have to do some more digging in tomorrow night.

On a side note, anyone else have trouble with the shade of green being different between the two gauges? The pressure gauge is a bit of a darker green that matches the OEM lighting quite well, while the fuel level gauge is a lighter, almost yellow, green.

Don't want to offend you, but did you take the schrader valve out before you put the elbow on. If you dont open the valve, your gauge will only move to the lowest reading when you turn it on.

Yep, pulled the schrader valve and threaded the elbow directly into the V3 manifold.

Not offended, thanks for the input. We're all here to generate ideas, right?

There is a grounding stud on the V3. Did you connect it to a good ground? I know you grounded the harness that comes to the V3 but when adding accessories you need to ground the V3 itself.

                  Did not know this.

                  Huh?

Where is this stud, and why would it have to be grounded if there are accessories on it? If you're grounding the accessory itself?

After looking at it, I'm going to re-ground the entire thing... I think I have 3 grounds all going to the same place, and it is too rusty for my liking.

My fuel gauge light is yellow, no doubt about it.

I was not aware of this either. Right now I just have two grounds in the area of the V3; the one from the wire harness and the one from the fuel level sender. I'll try grounding the V3 tonight as well.

Jack the stud is on the side of the manifold that faces the front of the truck...the "output" side if you will. Little thing that probably will have to nuts and some lock washers on it. All the grounds I have are connected to this point. No gauges though...

Also, for those talking about the color, I popped the light out of the back of the gauge and slipped on a green sleeve that came with one of the Autometer gauges I got for my Camaro. Fit perfectly.

You guys might see if those are sold seperately, or check the local autoparts stores for colored bulbs.

I'm pretty sure the bulb in these gauges are standard and I've seen a number of stores offer different colors in them.

                        Just a thought...

Ran a ground wire from the post on the V3 to the spot where I grounded everything else and now my gauge works great! Thanks guys!

Now if I could just get the two Autometer gauges to match... I installed the green rubber that came with both gauges, but they are different shades of green. Guess I'll make a trip to AutoZone and see if I can just find a couple green bulbs. They are number 161 bulbs by the way...

Rabid, I'd almost bet you can find some colored bulbs pretty easily. If not in the local stores, probably off the web.
