  • Dried Vegi Oil on Tank

What are you guys using to clean the dried vegi oil off your tank? I am getting a sticky mess around the fill tube and have tried simple green and a few other chemicals with poor results.

I've been wiping it away while it is wet.

I was told by a couple people there is a "Simple Purple" or something with purple in it that works better than anything else.

It should be on the shelf right next to the Simple Green.

I haven't allowed any oil to dry yet, so my experience is limited.

I have done a pretty good job cleaning up drips as they happen so haven't had an issue - YET. Have you tried cleaning it when the tank is still warm? I would think any degreaser with some elbow grease when the tank is warmed up would take it right off.

I just cleaned up my old tank the other night to get it ready to ship out when i find a buyer. I had a nice 2 year old dryed streek that ran down below the filler cap in the back of the tank all the way to the bottom. Purple power didn't touch it. It laughed in the face of Break Clean...i use a wire brush and ALOT of elbow grease and it finally came off. NEVER let it dry (for 2 years)

I have never needed to do it on my tank, but I cleaned up the outside of some of my filtering barrels with WD40. Worked pretty well for me.

I've used some Mr. Clean spray that seems to work well. Never tried it on 2 year old oil though...haha.

I would think most of your common grease cutting cleaners would to it, but I could be wrong.

I'm sure some would disagree, but I use carb cleaner to clean up just about anything. Haven't seen much it can't get rid of. I like the cheap stuff at Wal-Mart the best because it doesn't leave behind an oily residue like some carb cleaners do.

I wonder if spraying it with something like WD-40 would protect it from future spills?

Not sure, but WD-40 itself will clean up a lot of things. Surprising how many things you can use that stuff for.

purple power seems to work well. I'm not sure about the dried on stuff. i try to clean it up as soon as possible.
