  • Interesting crude oil facts

Last night I was watching a DVR'd episode of "How Do They Do it" on Science Channel I think... Anyway, it was an episode on how gasoline is made.

They said that a barrel of crude produces approx:

    - 23gal gasoline
    - 13gal of diesel
    - 2 gal of propane
    - 7gal jet fuel and heavy fuels
    - 8gal other plastics/petroleums

Lots of other good info that I forgot already :-)

    Hmm...interesting.

I'd like to see the return they get on all the products they produce from one barrel of crude. Even at $130/barrel, they still should come out way ahead. I'm sure there are other costs involved, but obviously they're in the business to make money.

One gallon of waste oil can equal almost one gallon of lube stock. If we send it to a re-refiner. The lube oil never breaks down...it just gets contaminated and the additives package breaks down.

If we burn it to heat our homes, our shops, in our trucks (as some people do) its gone for good. If we send it to a re-refiner who can turn waste oil back into a base lube stock it will lower our dependance on foreign oil.

I like the idea of using vegie oil to heat our homes, shops, and I am already running my truck on it.

So take your used oil to a collection facility that you know will end up at a re-refiner if you can.

That is only for oil they have to purchase from outsourcing. The oil they pull directly is much less expensive. And 80% of the land the oil companies already have to drill on has not seen a drill yet. I say we open up off shore drilling but if you want a lease you have to be already drilling on 80% of the land you already have. If not you must give up that land to any private us company that wants it. Let the mavricks drill if big oil does not want to.

I do however wonder how they got these numbers:

          - 23gal gasoline
          - 13gal of diesel
          - 2 gal of propane
          - 7gal jet fuel and heavy fuels
          - 8gal other plastics/petroleums

that is 53 gallons, but oil is 42 gallons to the barrel?

All of the things you listed are products produced from a base of 42 gallons of oil.

Refining the oil may include adding other chemicals to produce the final product. Jet fuel, for example, is oil based... not 100% oil.
