  • To those who use new oil...

I don't know if any of you use new oil due to the cost involved, but I just thought I'd pass along this friendly advice. One of my sources for waste oil is an ice rink that I work at. I'm the weekend assistant manager so I run the rink operations (yes, I drive the Zamboni ) as well as oversee the snack bar. Last weekend I was helping the kid in the snack bar change the oil. After I took the waste oil away and the fryer had been wiped down we poured the new oil in and turned it on. Usually the oil heats up quickly and a few tiny bubbles come up to the top but nothing crazy. This time once the fryer got up to around 200 degrees the oil started popping and spitting like crazy! It did that for about 10 minutes before it calmed down. We made absolutely sure that the fryer was clean and dry before we filled it with oil so this new oil DEFINITELY had water in it. I opened it myself so I know it was sealed. It was from Sysco, a large restaurant/institutional supply company here in New Jersey. Maybe it's a one in a million chance (I've never seen it happen before) but who knows, just beware...

Eh...you never know where you might find a score. Not too long ago I read about a guy who had one of his suppliers go belly up, bummer, but they gave him 5 cubees of new oil after they had sold off all of the equipment/fixtures.

I do! I have a good hook up on new oil and dewatering it is easy then I send it through a one micron filter before I put it in the truck. It smells good too!

I am not sure if the donaldson will catch the water...I was planning on cutting the first one open to check it out. I am not sure when I need to change it but I will post some pics when I do. Now that Clay told me how to post pics. Thanks man!

New oil SHOULD NOT have water in it, for safety reasons - as you discovered. But, it apparently often does. I know of someone in the VO distribution business, and they always test their supply (as in RR tanker cars!!) before packaging in cubies, etc. He says it is rare to have high water content, but it is possible. There was a thread somewhere some time ago debating whether new VO NEEDED dewatering or not. IIRC, the verdict was you should ALWAYS test your oil before burning it.

NO, WATER BLOCK FILTERS DO NOT REMOVE EMULSIFIED WATER FROM VO. No way, shape or form - it don't work that way. Most filters will plug up rather quickly from high water content in my experience (pre-filtering).

FWIW, our engines are fairly forgiving to SOME water content.

It is IP's that REALLY don't like the stuff. At least thats what the IP rebuilder told my buddy about his trashed 7.3 IDI pump. The heavier water content finds its way into places in the IP's that it stays in, and the damage is done by the corrosion in those places. I had already explained to him the importance of dewatering - he did not have a clue! After the IP (and injectors!) took a dump and IP guy chastised him for putting CRAP in his fuel tank - he believes me!
